El Salvador has various archaeological sites and remnants of a great civilization. Around the Maya archaeological sites, one can enjoy a wonderful experience and the grandeur of the Pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican Empire in El Salvador.
Some of the most important sites to visit are: the archaeological site of Tazumal (located in Chalchuapa, Santa Ana department), the archaeological site of San Andrés (located in Valle de Zapotitán, La Libertad department), and the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén (located in San Juan Opico, La Libertad department). The latter site is an indigenous village that was found under 14 layers of volcanic ash and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
