Welcome to an experience that will take you to discover one of the best-kept secrets of our identity: **indigo**.
This natural pigment, extracted from the leaves of the **jiquilite**, an ancestral plant, is much more than just a dye: it is a thread that connects our pre-Hispanic past with the colonial era and allows us to discover a fascinating part of the history of El Salvador.
For the Mayans, this mysterious blue color had great cultural and ceremonial importance. Blue pigments were used in various contexts, from objects and artistic representations to paintings and murals that have managed to withstand the passage of centuries, giving rise to what we now know as the legendary **“Maya Blue”**.
With the arrival of the Spaniards and during the colonial period, indigo acquired enormous commercial importance. Its intense color and its utility for dyeing textiles made it one of the most valuable products in the region, reaching to be exported to Europe.
Its economic importance was such that indigo came to be known as **“blue gold”**, becoming for centuries one of the great protagonists of the economic and cultural history of El Salvador.
