El Salvador: Central America's Hidden Gem
Surf, volcanoes, gastronomy and ancestral culture — all in a country the size of New Jersey.
A country that has it all
El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, hides a density of experiences that rivals much larger destinations. In just 21,000 km² you'll find world-class beaches, active volcanoes with emerald-colored lagoons, picturesque colonial towns and an exploding gastronomic scene.
You don't need weeks to discover El Salvador. You need curiosity.
The waves that conquered the world
El Tunco, El Sunzal and Punta Roca have become sacred names for the global surf community. In 2023, El Salvador hosted the ISA World Surfing Games, consolidating its position as a top-tier surf destination. But you don't need to be a pro: local schools will have you standing on a board in a single session.
Volcanoes and crater lagoons
The Volcano Complex — Santa Ana (Ilamatepec), Izalco and Cerro Verde — forms a dramatic triangle you can explore in a single day. The Santa Ana crater lagoon, with its turquoise waters surrounded by fumaroles, is one of the country's most iconic images.
Cuisine with identity
Pupusas are just the beginning. El Salvador is experiencing a culinary revolution where young chefs fuse ancestral techniques with local ingredients: loroco, chipilín, izote flower. Restaurants like Txoko and Café Luz have put the country on the international gastronomic radar.
La Ruta de las Flores
This corridor of towns in the western highlands — Juayúa, Ataco, Apaneca — offers single-origin coffee, vibrant street murals, artisan markets and a cool climate that contrasts with the tropical coast. On weekends, food festivals transform the plazas into flavor fairs.
How to get there
El Salvador International Airport (SAL) receives direct flights from Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Bogotá and Madrid. From the airport, any destination in the country is less than 3 hours by car.
